North & Galilee Area
Nazareth
- The city lies in the southern Galilee where Angel Gabriel announced to Virgin Mary that she would bear a child, it’s also where Jesus spent his childhood with Joseph and Mary. Since the 4th century, the churches were built on the sites connected with the Holy Family. One of the most famous churches is the Basilica of Annunciation it was built over the place where angel Gabriel appeared to Mary.
- “The angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth… and the angel said unto her, fear not Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.” Luke 1:26-31
Church of St. Joseph
- This Church was built over the cave where St. Joseph used to work, it is located to the opposite side of the Church of annunciation.
Church of St. Gabriel
- It’s a Greek Orthodox church that was built over Mary’s well which is also known as the house of Mary
Cana
- The place of Jesus first miracle where he turned the water into wine in a wedding. There are two churches in Cana, a Greek Orthodox Church and a Franciscan church that was built in 1879.
Capernaum
- This town is where Jesus chose his first disciples Peter, Andrew, James, John and Mathew, where he healed Peter’s mother in law, brought a child back to life, cured a leper, healed the centurion’s servant and more.
Tabgha
- The name comes from the Greek word “Heptapegon” that means “Seven springs” where in the past, seven springs met and flowed into the Sea of Galilee. It is the place where the miracle of loaves and fishes happened.
Haifa
- Haifa is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is built on the slopes of a mountain called Mount Carmel and its landscape is dominated by the golden dome of the Bahai Temple and its gardens. A large Carmelite monastery stands on the top of the Mount Carmel and was built on the site of earlier churches. The cave of Elijah is located in the lower part of the monastery.
Acre
- Acre lies 22 kilometers north of Haifa, it is a historic walled port-city with continuous settlement since the Phoenician period. The visitor can see characteristics of the Ottoman period in the town, such as castles, mosques, khans and baths. Moreover, many of the Holy sites are maintained by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. Acre’s old city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many archaeological digs have taken place there.
Muhraqa
- It’s the traditional site of the contest when the Canaanite worshipped Baal and his consort Ishtar, Prophet Elijah challenged the priests of Baal and tells whose God was more powerful. Now it has a Carmelite monastery that was built in 1886.
Mount Tabor
- Mount Tabor is located in Lower Galilee. Christians believe that this location is the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus .The first churches were built in the fifth century on this site. One can see a wonderful view of the fields from the top of the Mountain.
Sea of Galilee
- The Sea of Galilee is located in the northeast of the Holy Land, close to the Golan Heights. The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake of Tiberias, is considered the lowest freshwater lake on earth and the second-lowest lake overall after the Dead Sea. Undergrounds springs are the main source of water to the lake and to the Jordan River.
Caesarea
- Caesarea is an ancient town located between Haifa and Jaffa. It was built by Herod the Great in the year 20 BCE and named after Caesar Augustus. This city served the Roman Empire as an administrative center.
Jaffa
- It has always been an important port for the ancient trade route, which connected Egypt with Mesopotamia and the north. Jaffa is the biblical port-town of Joppa which was founded by Japhey, Noah’s son.
Mount of Beatitudes
- The traditional location for the Mount of Beatitudes is on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee and close to Tabgha. A Byzantine church was erected lower down the slope from the current site in the 4th century, and it was used until the 7th century, Remains of a cistern and a monastery are still visible. The current Roman Catholic Franciscan chapel was built in 1937-38 following plans by Italian architect A. Barluzzi. Pope John Paul II celebrated a mass at this site in March 2000. The Jesus Trail pilgrimage route connects the Mount to other sites from the life of Jesus.
